Vancouver Whitecaps FC History

The Vancouver Whitecaps may have only joined MLS in 2011 (alongside the Portland Timbers), but the team has a long history in the Pacific Northwest. The Whitecaps first launched in 1974  as a member of the now-defunct North American Soccer League and moved to the Canadian Soccer League in 1986 as the 86ers. The team would remain as the 86ers until 2000 when the Whitecaps name resurfaced as part of the A-League, which would later become the United Soccer League (USL).

Finally, on March 18, 2009, the Whitecaps were introduced as the newest franchise in MLS, where they would keep the Whitecaps name as part of the United States' top division. The club qualified for their first playoff run in 2012, becoming the first Canadian MLS franchise to do so. Meanwhile, the Whitecaps have claimed the Voyageurs Cup at the annual interleague Canadian Championship in 2015, 2022, and 2013 and count 2013 MLS Golden Boot winner Camilo Sanvezzo among their alumni.

awesome game....whitecaos played so well...I am sure everyone appreciated whitecaps' efforts into the game. All their efforts and hard work was paid off.

  • Good exciting end to end play

Whitecaps were quick on the ball and shut down Messi’s opportunities. Passing the ball was more accurate than many previous games. Would not hurt their game to take more shots on goal. I think the Caps goalie comes too far out of his crease and will get punished by talented players.

  • Great game, great crowd. Facilities still lacking

Whitecaps as a team are playing great this season. Very entertaining style. Great atmosphere, lively crowd. More than usual games as Nessi was the draw, but whitecaps proved to be a much stronger team. Facilities at BC Place for those with disabilities is very lacking. Elevators that should prioritize those with a disabilities , are not enforced by staff, who seem powerless at ensuring proper use. This has happened many times now, regardless of event. Very disappointing..

  • Always fun at BC place!

Entry is well-organized and ambiance in the stadium is great. They are very strict about the bag policy though. I had 3 small items in a small tote bag, they let me take the items with me but I had to leave the bag at the gates.

  • AMAZING TEAM!! Lame Fans :/

by Canadianbacon on 2025-04-05BC Place - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

Vancouver whitecaps are amazing MLS team! Top of the league in fact! Fans, not so much. Vancouver is seriously lacking soccer(football) soul., super low attendance turn out, not much cheering at the actual event, rather embarrassing as far as I’m concerned. You know what happens when you take things for granted, right??! Those things eventually leave..: Tisk-tisk lame Vancouverites :/
