Los Angeles Chargers History

Established in Los Angeles in 1959 as a charter member of the American Football League, the Chargers moved south in 1961 and played in San Diego through the 2016 season. Advancing to five of the first six AFL Championship games ever played, the Chargers claimed the 1963 title and later joined the National Football League when the two leagues merged in 1970.

Since the merger, the Chargers have appeared in the playoffs 16 times and went on to appear in Super Bowl XXIX in 1999. They have captured 15 division titles to date. In 2017, the Chargers moved back to Los Angeles after 56 seasons in San Diego. The team has a total of 15 inductees into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, including LaDainian Tomlinson, Lance Alworth, Ron Mix, Sid Gillman, Dan Fouts, Kellen Winslow, Charlie Joiner, Fred Dean, Bobby Beathard, Don Coryell and Junior Seau.

Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium

The Chargers called the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum home during the team’s first year of existence in 1959. After relocating from San Diego to Los Angeles in 2017, the team played at Dignity Health Sports Park through the 2019 season while SoFi Stadium was under construction. As the first indoor-outdoor stadium in America, SoFi Stadium is a state-of-the-art venue that can accommodate up to 70,240 fans for Chargers games. Costing $4.9 billion to construct, it is the most expensive NFL stadium to be built.

Located on the site of the former Hollywood Park racetrack, the stadium has played host to a variety of sporting events, including Super Bowl LVI in 2022 and the 2023 College Football Playoff National Championship, and will be the site for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies at the Olympic Games in 2028. It is also the home field for the Rams, making SoFi Stadium one of two stadiums currently shared by two NFL teams.

  • Chargers Steal 1

This was our first NFL game and it wont be our last. The atmosphere in the stadium at the end of the game was unbelievable! We are HUGE Saskatchewan Roughrider(CFL) fans and found it very funny so few people had even heard of the CFL never mind the Roughriders. The park was extremely easy to get around in and get out. The staff were very pleasant and helpful. Other fans welcomed us and we cheered their team to a win.

  • Chargers Raiders Nfl game

This was our family's first NFL game. We are out of town and it was a bucket list item. We drove from palm springs and we arrived at the turnoff for the stadium at 11am which was less than a mile it took us over 2 hours to park the car with a 75.00 parking pass. Parked the car at 120 got our seats 145. Within five minutes a fight broke out behind us and took security a while to break it up. As one fan stated raiders fans come for a vacation go home on probation. My family of 4 did not feel safe in the environment it reminded me of a scene from prison break. Getting into the stadium was frustrating especially when you arrive at 11am. On the way out police were directing traffic why police would not direct traffic on the way in I do not understand it was absolute gridlock with some driver rage this not a game that I would recommend for a Christmas outing for the family. Maybe another game with a different tem

  • NFL Football: Bengals at Chargers

by HipsterDoofus on 2012-12-13Qualcomm Stadium San Diego Chargers - San DiegoRating: 3 out of 5

First NFL game that I went to in person. This league is EXTREMELY OVER-RATED AND MASSIVELY OVER-HYPED! I did enjoy going for pizza in between plays. Ordinary football at extremely high prices. It is on par with NASCAR racing - when NASCAR is under a yellow caution flag.

  • Parking nightmare...missed the game entirely

by Lobo13 on 2012-10-17Qualcomm Stadium San Diego Chargers - San DiegoRating: 1 out of 5

My hotel was a 15 minute drive from Qualcomm Stadium. I left 1 hour before kickoff. The last mile and a half to the stadium was total gridlock, took forever. Nobody directing traffic. I arrive at the stadium just as the second quarter was starting (listening on car radio) only to find a sign saying the parking lot full. Was told to drive up a steep hill/street and find on the street parking (which there was none of) drove around streets that were full, had to drive even farther away from the stadium. I calculated that I was far enough away where it would take at least 20 minutes to half an hour from the time I left my car to the time I got to my seat which would put the game somewhere in the 3rd quarter. At this point I decided it just wasn't worth it and abandoned the whole idea of even attending the game. I'm from Canada and was in LA for 4 days, figured I would drive down and catch the game before leaving for home, what a mistake that was. This is a poorly organized area without adequate parking. I received no less than 3 emails from the Chargers asking me how my experience was...before the game had even taken place! Are these guys sharp or what? LOL. Yet not one of those emails warned me that in order to get a parking space I would need to get to the stadium 3 hours before game time...yes you read that right...3 hours (which I read on their website after the fact). I've attended games at much bigger stadiums in much bigger cities (Rose Bowl etc) and have never had a problem even remotely like this. I will never consider attending a game here ever again.

Qualcomm is a great place to see a game. Trolley worked great too for parking. Brought a family of 5 and sat in the family section.

  • Chargers beat 49ers

by 49erRichard on 2011-02-15Qualcomm Stadium San Diego Chargers - San DiegoRating: 4 out of 5

Tailgating at event was great. Beautiful afternoon and evening for event. Despite my 49ers losing to the Chargers, my buddies and I really enjoyed our experience. We had good seats in a lively section and the concessions offered good fare. Line-up early at the washrooms at half-time because there were large crowds.
