About

Formed in 1993 at the world-renowned Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland, Apocalyptica began life as a loving, lo-fi nod to Metallica from four classically-trained musicians. The project would take on a life of its own when they finally released Plays Metallica By Four Cellos in 1996.

Unbeknownst to Apocalyptica, they'd just boarded a rocket ship that would propel them through eight rapturously received records, a staggering six million records sold, and a relentless touring schedule.

And it was on the anniversary - when the band's debut turned 25 - that an idea came about. The result was a sonic love-letter - an album they'd simply title Plays Metallica, Vol. 2, and the passion poured into the recording project is plain to hear and see.

Judging by the deep cuts and recent highlights making up Apocalyptica's ninth album, this is no mere best-of. It would see them featuring Rob Trujillo on a storming rendition of thrash classic The Four Horsemen as a lead single, followed by a stunning rendition The Unforgiven II taken from Metallica's 1997 release, Reload. For their third single, the band released a unique reimagining of One, taken from Metallica's 1988 landmark ...And Justice For All. Featuring Metallica frontman James Hetfield voicing a spoken-word rendition of those inimitable, now immortal lyrics, it stands as far more than a unique collaboration. It is nothing short of history in the making.

Took me 20 years to see them live. It won't take another 20 to see them again! It truly left me speechless

  • Good Experience Overall

by Fan on 2025-02-25Grey Eagle Event Centre - CalgaryRating: 4 out of 5

I would give 5 stars to Apocalyptica, and 3 to the setup for Nita Strauss’ opening act (it was too loud, not properly equalized). And 4 stars to the venue, only because our seats where not properly anchored to the floor and it moved all night long; other than that great venue with everything from parking to access, seating, etc well organized.

  • Sound Was An Issue

by Cyco on 2025-02-25Grey Eagle Event Centre - CalgaryRating: 3 out of 5

The mix was poor, especially for Nita Strauss who looked beleaguered the crowd wasn’t excited.

  • Amazing concert! Great venue

  • Amazing

by Dave on 2025-02-25Grey Eagle Event Centre - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

This band is very entertaining!! They definitely put their heart and souls into this. Just outstanding. They also bring comic personality to the show which was fun. They put in little extras too like playing the national anthem on the cello. The event was great, the venue was just as good, while we waited we hit the buffet, it was prime rib night, the staff everywhere were so friendly! I’d definitely recommend! Would definitely recommend adding extra merch tables, the line was too long for me to bother making any purchases and I did want a shirt.

  • Will never forget this one

I have been listening to Apocolytica since 1996 in high school. Never thought I would see them live and here we are. These guys can put in a show!! One of the top concerts I have been to in my life. Please come back again.

  • Must see!

by Mariah on 2025-02-25Rating: 5 out of 5

Saw them tonight at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver. All four members put on an amazing show! The audience was engaged the whole time and you could tell just how excited the crowd was the whole time. Their playing was clear and beautiful and they had just enough “soft” songs to break up the chaos (in a good way). You can tell they’ve been doing this for a long time with how comfortable they are, as well as the quality of their playing/showmanship. Will definitely be seeing them when they come back again!

  • Amazing performance!

by Jesse on 2025-02-24Midway Music Hall - EdmontonRating: 4 out of 5

Wow, Apocalyptica put on a powerful performance. So glad we got to see them performing live. One of the cellists was even feeling a bit sick with the flu but still managed to put on such an amazing show. My only complaint was that the venue, Midway Music Hall was standing only admission. No seating. We were there for 4.5 hours so by the end of it us, as well as most of the people around us, were showing obvious signs of discomfort from sore feet/backs. There’s not a lot of option for moving around to stretch backs or feet once the concerts start.

  • It was great experience

  • The fountain is dry

by Thirsty for water on 2025-02-22Burton Cummings Theatre - WinnipegRating: 3 out of 5

This venue is amazing and always hosts great entertainment. However, your water fountain on the main floor is embarrassingly obvious in need of an update. The water stream was less than 1 cm from the spout. To enhance my experience, your concession staff told me i can refill my bought bottle at that fountain. Embarrassing that this represents a water source.

  • Amazing!

by Clau on 2025-02-22MTELUS - MontrealRating: 5 out of 5

It was my 4th or 5th time seeing Apocalyptica, second time at MTelus for their show. The show is fantastic, and massive thank you to the security staff, one lady in particular, that went above and beyond to make sure I could see from my place. My seat was at the edge of a row and she found me a fantastic spot on the first row of the balcony minutes after Apocalyptica entered the scene. It made the night unforgettable for me to be able to see them perfectly and fully enjoy each minute.

  • Meilleur show instrumental ever

by Ben Carrots on 2025-02-17MTELUS - MontrealRating: 5 out of 5

  • Singing pop

by Mark on 2022-05-08MTELUS - MontrealRating: 3 out of 5

While a strong singer with good stage presence, need to ditch Perez - too poppy - should join Taylor Swift. Made show bipolar, immiscible great cello rock/metal with pop - doesn't work. Was cringing with the Perez pop songs (thought about leaving the show at that point).

  • Great show

by Amélie on 2022-05-08MTELUS - MontrealRating: 5 out of 5

The boys had great energy even if it was the next to last show. The set list was awesome! ♥️
