About

Formed in 1993 at the world-renowned Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland, Apocalyptica began life as a loving, lo-fi nod to Metallica from four classically-trained musicians. The project would take on a life of its own when they finally released Plays Metallica By Four Cellos in 1996.

Unbeknownst to Apocalyptica, they'd just boarded a rocket ship that would propel them through eight rapturously received records, a staggering six million records sold, and a relentless touring schedule.

And it was on the anniversary - when the band's debut turned 25 - that an idea came about. The result was a sonic love-letter - an album they'd simply title Plays Metallica, Vol. 2, and the passion poured into the recording project is plain to hear and see.

Judging by the deep cuts and recent highlights making up Apocalyptica's ninth album, this is no mere best-of. It would see them featuring Rob Trujillo on a storming rendition of thrash classic The Four Horsemen as a lead single, followed by a stunning rendition The Unforgiven II taken from Metallica's 1997 release, Reload. For their third single, the band released a unique reimagining of One, taken from Metallica's 1988 landmark ...And Justice For All. Featuring Metallica frontman James Hetfield voicing a spoken-word rendition of those inimitable, now immortal lyrics, it stands as far more than a unique collaboration. It is nothing short of history in the making.

  • Amazing but cramped

by JD on 2025-03-22Grey Eagle Event Centre - CalgaryRating: 4 out of 5

Apocalyptica was amazing however the seating left something to be desired. The seats here very cramped and although I am not a very big person I could not sit square shoulder without touching both my neighbours.

  • Great band, awesome music, poor sound tho.

by David S on 2025-03-06Queen Elizabeth Theatre - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

The band was great! They played the greatest hits and other unexpected jewels from their repertory. They were interacting with the audience and made us feel part of the show. However during the show the sound was poor by times, not always. But this was a little bit bitter after all. If you are hesitant to go and see them, please GO! The overall experience was good enough.

  • Sublime yet Electrifying Performance

by Mario P on 2025-02-28Queen Elizabeth Theatre - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

Great performance, all great except for the annoying security guards constantly banning people to take videos, don't recall seeing any sign about that Apocalyptica rocks, they deliver every time

  • Such a good performance, and amazing musicality!

by Sara on 2025-02-27Queen Elizabeth Theatre - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

I loved everything about the Apocalyptica performance. The acoustics at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre were great for the cellos, but were not optimized for the opening act, Nita Straus. That act was painful to listen to, and the guitars and vocals were very difficult to hear over the drum and bass.

  • Brilliant performance. Wrong venue

by Nvda on 2025-02-27Queen Elizabeth Theatre - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

They played amazingly well and did their best. But queen Elizabeth theatre has awful sound. It was way too much base and you couldn't hear the more intricate notes being played by the band. Wish the organisers paid more attention to audio while booking a venue.

  • Great show!

Impressive musicians and great entertainment!! I had a great time!

  • Great show with an underwhelming opening

by Mike on 2025-02-27Queen Elizabeth Theatre - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

The sound during Nita Strauss’ gig was so bassy, I could not hear anything besides pre-recorded bass track and constant boom-wotototo of the bass drum and floor toms. I was genuinely worried about Apocalyptica part and then… …they played an amazing show. With an amazing sound. I definitely need to see them again one day.

  • Great Finnish

by Nick Name on 2025-02-26Grey Eagle Event Centre - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

This very enthusiastic and engaging cello trio, supported by strong drumming, were an absolute treat. My son who is in junior high band and enjoys some metal was also quite impressed. The full Metallica set was impressive. Would love to see them again with a wider range of renditions.

  • Poor Audio Settings

    by O.N. on 2025-02-25Midway Music Hall - EdmontonRating: 3 out of 5

The band performance was perfect, but acoustical settings were so off, that I couldn’t enjoy it.

  • Amazing!!

by KM on 2025-02-25Grey Eagle Event Centre - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

Was extremely happy to finally see this band and they blew me out of the water with how talented they are. Was one of the best concerts I have been too. I wasn't impressed with Nita as the opening act. They seemed off and things didn't sound as good.
